Walgreens Stores

The Walgreen Company is an American company, founded in1901. Charles R. Walgreen Sr. purchased the Chicago drugstore where he had worked as a pharmacist – and that started the Walgreen chain. It is the second-largest pharmacy store chain in the United States.

Caruso Turley Scott has provided design services since 1992.

In 2008 our team participated in the design of the Nations first LEED certified drug store, located in Mira Mesa, California.  Additional LEED certified stores and sustainability improvements followed.

Sustainability Features

• 30% energy cost savings above ASHRAE 90.1-2004 energy standard

• Skylights and solar tubes designed to provide 75% of store’s energy needs
• Coolers, freezers and exterior signs use LED lights, reducing energy use by 50%
• Native plants requiring no permanent irrigation
• Bike racks are available, store is located near public transportation routes
• Reserved parking is available for hybrid vehicles
• Signage will inform customers about the building’s green features
• Low VOC-emitting materials for the building’s interior creating enhanced Indoor Environmental Quality

• Low-flow fixtures reducing domestic water use
• Wood products were harvested from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified forests
